Edgewater, NJ: Where You Can Live and Play Along the Hudson River

Hugging the western shore of the Hudson River, Edgewater, NJ, offers breathtaking views of Manhattan, plenty of recrGrandCoveeational opportunities, fine dining, upscale shopping, an excellent school system and, surprisingly, a flock of wild parrots. Bordered on the north by historic Fort Lee, Edgewater features condos for sale ranging from $150,000 to over $1 million.

Residents flock to Veterans Field, where they enjoy the use of three softball fields, a 1/3 mile-long track, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a Little League field and a playground. They also meet up at the Edgewater Community Center which has programs for kids, teens, adults and seniors. Boating enthusiasts dock at the Edgewater Marina with approximately 85 slips and which can accommodate boats up to 60 feet, except for sail boats. Strolling along the River Walk, which runs from Fort Lee to Bayonne, you can enjoy views of Manhattan and long stretches of park land—when hunger strikes, there are numerous restaurants and cafes along the way.

Education in Edgewater, NJ

The excellent Edgewater School District serves kindergarten through sixth grade; for grades 7-12, students attend the Leonia Public Schools as part of a sending/receiving relationship between the two school systems. The Edgewater Free Public Library offers events and programs for children, teens and adults.

Traveling to Manhattan is a breeze from Edgewater. New Jersey Transitbuses serve the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan and the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal. There is also ferry service to the West Midtown Ferry Terminal in Manhattan, offered by NY Waterway.

The Edgewater Parrots

Edgewater is home to a free-flying colony of Monk Parakeets, also known as Quaker Parrots. These small, green parrots have lived in Edgewater since 1980 and currently reside in Memorial Park, It is not known how the birds originally came to Edgewater; there is speculation that they escaped from a damaged crate at JFK airport in the 1960s.
