Hoboken has recently made the number one spot on CBS News’ top US cities for hipsters. Surprisingly, it beat out other hip cities like San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA on the same list. So what makes Hoboken the most desirable location for hipsters in America?
Affordable Living
Not surprisingly, people are flocking across the Hudson River to escape the skyrocketing prices in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The New York Times found that the cost to live in the average North Brooklyn condo was over $1.5 million last year. But just across the Hudson River, Hoboken condo prices were about a third of the cost, around $600,000.
Young, Educated Residents
Nearly half of Hoboken’s 50,000 residents are young, between the ages of 20 and 34. The result of this younger population is obvious: There are more local coffee shops and yoga studios in the area.
And the city is highly educated. Nearly three-quarters of Hoboken residents hold a bachelor’s degree. The value of an education is clear with Hoboken’s own Stevens Institute of Technology, a private university, sitting along the Hudson River, a crown jewel of the city.
